You Do NOT Need a Law Degree

A lot of people think that you need a Juris Doctorate (JD) degree to make any real change in the world. This idea goes to the bigger issue that several things have been assumed about law school that are no longer true (one of which was never true if you ask me):

1. There are always jobs for lawyers.
– This hasn’t been true for the past 15 years.

2. People assumed you were smart if you had a JD.
– In my opinion, this has been tricky since law schools started churning out JDs for the money law students paid.

3. Law degrees are flexible and you can do anything you want, in any field you want, once you have the degree.
– Personally, I don’t believe this was ever true. I can’t even begin to describe how difficult a career-change is for a lawyer.

Ultimately, I think it is important to get a JD if you want to practice law; however, people should understand that not having a JD does NOT mean you can’t work within government or even be an advocate. Never let a piece of paper, or lack-thereof, keep you from pursuing this line of work or from getting involved on issues that matter to you.
